Mercedes-Benz is a luxury automaker with a history that dates back to the beginning of the industry itself. The brand has continued to innovate for over a century and shows no signs of slowing down. Based on the idea of “What if,” the Mercedes-Benz brand continues to rock the world year after year. Here’s a brief look at the history of Mercedes-Benz from us here at Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead.

  • 1886 – Karl Benz patented the first gasoline-powered car known as the Benz Patent Motorwagen. Bertha, his wife and business partner, funded the project. She became the first person to drive long distance in an automobile.
  • 1901 – The first Mercedes car officially hit the market with an output of 35 hp. The Mercedes Jellinek was named after an Austrian businessman who helped create the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft trademark.
  • 1927 – The first Mercedes-Benz sports car, the SSK, hit the market under the new brand name. It was designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
  • 1930s – Mercedes-Benz broke into motorsports. The “Silver Arrows” effectively dominated the competition throughout the decade.
  • 1950s – Mercedes-Benz developed the 300SL. The “gullwing” doors are the inspiration for those of high-end supercars, like Lamborghini.
  • 1960s – The German luxury brand unleashed the 600 Pullman on the world. It was designed as the pinnacle of the luxury segment.
  • 1967 – The AMG performance division was founded by former Mercedes-Benz engineers.
  • Present Day – Mercedes-Benz continues to dominate motorsports. The brand innovates year after year, raising the bar for the entire luxury segment.
