Mercedes-Benz M-Class Achieves 20-Year Milestone

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class was unveiled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama 20 years ago. It has long served as an off-road SUV unlike any other and it has quite a portfolio. The popular SUV was designed for drivers who wanted a combination of luxury and off-road prowess that they simply couldn’t get in other brands. That led to the Mercedes-Benz M-Class achieving its 20-year milestone.

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class launched in May 1997 as an off-road SUV with exceptional ground clearance, all-wheel drive, and plenty of interior space. There are few models to this day that can match the off-roading ride comfort and exceptional design.

The original 1997 W 163 Mercedes-Benz M-Class features an independent front and rear suspension and permanent all-wheel drive. It also came equipped with an Electronic Traction System that, when combined with the suspension, could increase safety and stability on any surface.

Unlike many automakers, Mercedes-Benz wasn’t afraid to innovative with a versatile concept. It paid off with the second-generation M-Class touching down in the 2005 model year. That model featured an enhanced suspension and unibody construction that further increases torsional rigidity and comfort.

Today’s Mercedes-Benz M-Class launched in 2011 and immediately received praise from throughout the industry. The sheer level of luxury, off-road capability, and improved efficiency made it an off-road SUV that stood out from the competition with ease.

We here at Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead are happy to see the M-Class continuing to prove its metal as a premier luxury off-roading SUV.

Mercedes-Benz Golf Sponsorship: Masters Tournament History

Masters Tournament History

Mercedes-Benz has been the global sponsor of the Masters Tournament since 2014, one of the world’s premier golf competitions. Held every year at the Augusta National Golf Club in early April, this tournament is truly a spectacle. Mercedes had been an international sponsor since 2008, a great match for both the tournament and the automaker.

According to the official Masters Tournament website, the Masters Tournament history is impressive. Originally called the “Augusta National Invitational,” this competition was started in 1934 and was won by Horton Smith. Prominent players who have also won in the past include Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and Jack Nicklaus (the “Big Three” of the 1960s and 1970s). Believe it or not, prize money can exceed nearly $9 million.

“The Masters is the most prestigious golf tournament in the world. It is a great honor for Mercedes-Benz to now be associated with the Masters Tournament as one of the three Global Sponsors”, said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive VP at Mercedes-Benz, when the global sponsorship was signed.

Some famous traditions from the Masters Tournament include the signature green jacket that is presented to the champion. Other prizes include a crystal vase for lowest daily scores, crystal bowls for holes-in-one, and there is a special Par-3 Contest as well. At Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead, we can’t wait to see this year’s Masters Tournament.

History of Mercedes-Benz

History of Mercedes-Benz: Present day 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT

Mercedes-Benz is a luxury automaker with a history that dates back to the beginning of the industry itself. The brand has continued to innovate for over a century and shows no signs of slowing down. Based on the idea of “What if,” the Mercedes-Benz brand continues to rock the world year after year. Here’s a brief look at the history of Mercedes-Benz from us here at Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead.

  • 1886 – Karl Benz patented the first gasoline-powered car known as the Benz Patent Motorwagen. Bertha, his wife and business partner, funded the project. She became the first person to drive long distance in an automobile.
  • 1901 – The first Mercedes car officially hit the market with an output of 35 hp. The Mercedes Jellinek was named after an Austrian businessman who helped create the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft trademark.
  • 1927 – The first Mercedes-Benz sports car, the SSK, hit the market under the new brand name. It was designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
  • 1930s – Mercedes-Benz broke into motorsports. The “Silver Arrows” effectively dominated the competition throughout the decade.
  • 1950s – Mercedes-Benz developed the 300SL. The “gullwing” doors are the inspiration for those of high-end supercars, like Lamborghini.
  • 1960s – The German luxury brand unleashed the 600 Pullman on the world. It was designed as the pinnacle of the luxury segment.
  • 1967 – The AMG performance division was founded by former Mercedes-Benz engineers.
  • Present Day – Mercedes-Benz continues to dominate motorsports. The brand innovates year after year, raising the bar for the entire luxury segment.

Mercedes-Benz’s New Manufacturing Plant Under Construction

Mercedes-Benz is known for luxury vehicles, but the German automaker also produces the popular Sprinter Van. Commonly used for business purposes in the United States, demand has been steadily increasing over the years. Due to high import tariffs, the vans, which were assembled in Germany, have been taken apart, shipped, then reassembled in the United States. In order to simplify the process, the German automaker is building a new manufacturing plant.New Manufacturing Plant

Mercedes-Benz’s new manufacturing plant will be located in North Charleston, South Carolina. The German automaker plans to invest $500 million into building the new plant that will ultimately create 1,300 jobs. The new production center will join the existing Mercedes-Benz plant that reassembles the vans once they arrive in the United States.

Overall, 2015 Sprinter van sales jumped 11% compared to the previous year, coming to a total of 28,000 units moved. With 2016 looking even better, the automaker decided to build the new plant in order to reduce delivery time and avoid the high import tariffs.

“We are combining all of our global expertise and experience in this plant. In doing so, we make it one of the most advanced facilities in North America,” said Frank Klein, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Head of Operations.

Here at Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead, we couldn’t be more excited for the building of a new plant here in the United States!

Mercedes-Benz May Sales 12.9% Higher than April

Mercedes-Benz reported yet another strong sales month, with May sales of 29,299 cars, 2,848 vans, and 420 smarts, bringing the USA total to 32,567 vehicles sold for the month.

The best performers were by far the automaker’s larger models as well as Mercedes-AMG’s high-performance cars. Taking the lead was the C-Class luxury sedan with 6,954 units sold, followed by the GLC-Class luxury crossover with 4,183 units sold, and the GLE-Class luxury SUV with 4,003 units sold. Meanwhile, high-performance models were up 34.6% from last year.

Mercedes-Benz May Sales

The automaker’s Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) models were popular as well, with sales of 11,327 units, up 1% year-to-date. These are some of our most popular vehicles at Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead.

Mercedes-Benz May sales were 12.9% higher than in April and particularly successful in China, where they increased by more than a third within five months. In Great Britain, Italy, and Spain too, sales increased around 14%.

So far this year, Mercedes has already sold 818,000 new cars, up 12.3% compared to the same period last year; and it’s only looking up from there.

“Sales continue at a steady pace in the second-quarter,” said Dietmar Exler, president and CEO of MBUSA. “Excitement is building as we look toward the coming months with the launch of three new dream cars, including the S-Class Cabriolet, SL and SLC Roadsters and the all-new E-Class Sedan.”

Muhammad Ali’s bejeweled Mercedes-Benz selling for Charity

There’s no denying that Muhammad Ali was one of the greatest boxers of our time, but did you know he also owned a bejeweled Mercedes that was as flamboyant as his personality?\

Nicknamed the “Golden Angel Wing,” Ali’s ride was a 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S worth more than most of us make in a lifetime. It features 270 precious stones and jewels, including diamonds, and 23-karat gold flourishes on the bumpers, grill, headlamp assembly, all the knobs and switches, and even the accelerator pedal. We’ve got some luxurious cars here at Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead, but none quite like that!

As you might expect, he didn’t really drive the car. The mileage on it is not much more than 500 miles and Ali only owned it for about two years in the 1980s after it was gifted to him. However, he did say he wished for it to be used or displayed to “benefit mankind” after he passed it on.

He’s going to get his wish, as Muhammad Ali’s bejeweled Mercedes-Benz is estimated to be worth around $1.5 million and will go up for auction, with the proceeds going to fight global world hunger.

That’s a way to pay it forward in honor of a visionary this world always looked up to.

Mercedes GLS-Class SUV Praised by Reviewers

Mercedes GLS-Class SUV

Mercedes-Benz is a name strongly associated with the height of luxury and comfort when it comes to automobiles. The brand recently added an S-Class SUV to its lineup — the 2017 Mercedes GLS-Class SUV. Over the course of the past two years, the company has aimed to overhaul the SUV and crossover segment of its lineup, and the result is astonishing. The GLS-Class has reviewers raving over the SUV’s seamless combination of comfort and performance.

The entry-level member of the GLS SUV lineup is the GLS350d, powered by a 255-horsepower diesel engine. After that, the lineup goes GLS450, GLS550, and the range-topping AMG GLS63 powered by a 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine that cranks out 577 horsepower altogether. That’s a lot of power, and coupled with Mercedes-Benz’s cutting-edge 4Matic all-wheel drive, it seems like these SUVs can conquer just about any terrain the world flings at them. Prices for 2017 models have not yet been announced, but 2016 prices ranged anywhere from $65,500 to $122,000.

The 2017 GLS will also be receiving a face-lift contributing to the overall exterior appearance of the vehicle, and according to reviewers, something as simple as a name change can spell bigger sales for a vehicle because buyers tend to think the car is new. In addition, the GLS-Class SUVs will be equipped with a system called Active Body Control, which controls body roll and helps the GLS feel lighter and less cumbersome when taking curves. Obviously, the vehicle’s driving experience benefits from this advanced technology, which allows for a more comfortable ride.

The Mercedes GLS-Class SUV combines luxury with performance, delivering the functionality and capability of the SUV and crossover class in the form of top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz engineering and quality. Quality you can trust. It’s no wonder that reviewers throughout the industry have fallen in love. What’s stopping you from checking out this awe-inspiring work today?

Mercedes-AMG Model Lineup to Increase After New York Auto Show

AMG will be getting some exciting new upgrades and expansions in the upcoming years. Announced at the New York International Auto Show, the chairman of AMG announced that vehicle sales rose a whopping 40%, leading the Mercedes-AMG brand to expand its lineup.

Although nothing is official yet, according to AutoNews(subscription required) the brand will get roughly 10 new nameplates, based on existing Mercedes models. AMG is known for its high-performance design, making it a world leader in street-to-track automotive design and engineering. Plus, the styling is unparalleled, with sleek curves, carbon fiber, chrome and more. Best of all, the Mercedes-AMG model lineup is notorious for rich engine sounds.

“We’re going to expand our portfolio to 48 different models by the end of the year,” said Tobias Moers, chairman of AMG. “Stand-alone AMG showrooms are getting feasible worldwide. We are going to open up one in Japan, and we’re having a discussion in Australia about that.”

Roughly a dozen dealerships in the US have a dedicated AMG showroom, which will likely see an expansion thanks to good sales. Mercedes announced this number may be expanding to over 100 in upcoming years. We can’t wait to see more AMG models on the road. What do you think of this incredible news? Tell us below!

New Mercedes E-Class Engines to Include Diesel Option

Mercedes’ OM diesel engines have seen a long reign in the company’s vehicle lineup, with the OM 651 being the most-produced engine in the brand’s history. Now, however, the OM 651 is being pushed aside in favor of a new OM diesel engine. The OM 654, as it will be called, will be offered in the new Mercedes E-Class as one powertrain option for the upcoming car.

The new OM 654 is said to be significantly lighter than its predecessor, as well as consuming significantly less fuel and releasing fewer emissions. The new diesel engine will debut in the new Mercedes E-Class E 220 d and is expected to provide an NEDC-estimated 60 mpg combined fuel rating, as well as a 25 horsepower boost over the previous engine, which cranked out 170 horsepower in comparison to the new engine’s 195 ponies. Mercedes’ goal in developing the new engine was to meet the standards for the Real Driving Emissions legislature, while providing superior performance and efficiency.

In addition to finding a home among the E Class engine lineup, the new OM 651 is also expected to be put into the A Class, V Class, and S Class models in addition to the Sprinter van. The engine was also designed to be modular and compact so that it can be easily modified to fit the legal restrictions of any of the various countries in which Mercedes vehicles are sold. So you can expect to see this incredible piece of engineering pop up in a number of places soon. Prepare yourself for Mercedes level diesel performance, the kind everyone’s been wanting.
